In 2009, the European Parliament called for the creation of a Pan-European memorial for all victims of totalitarianism in 20th century.

An international open competition was launched in Brussels under its auspices in 2017, and Jean Rey Square was chosen as the site. 

The charcoal drawing named‘The Messenger’ was part of thechosen design entitled An Echo in Time. It is based on the So's imagination and memory of the site.
